An Open Letter to Mark Zuckerberg:
Dear Mr. Zuckerberg:
I am the Executive Director of Community Mediation in New Haven, CT. I can say, from my own experience, and that of my staff and volunteers, that conflicts directly resulting from or aggravated by Facebook interactions constitute at least 20% of the cases that we receive.
If I look at just the mediation sessions that we conduct with people between the ages of 12 and 24, that number is closer to 30%. These cases range from the posting of offensive or unauthorized pictures to misunderstood posts and comments from loved ones that result in long-standing battles and divided families. Facebook has also been utilized to humiliate, intimidate and/or bully. Some cases have even resulted in assaults, criminal threatening, and even deaths.
On behalf of those signed below, I would like to say we do not consider you to be personally responsible for these conflicts or their escalation. We still would like you to use the success of Facebook to help support the community mediation programs that work diligently to:
· — Mediate conflicts directly resulting from Facebook interactions
· –Train youth to communicate peacefully both face-to-face and online
· –Run restorative justice programs that keep youth out of the justice system and out of trouble
· — Assist thousands of people across the country in learning to resolve conflict peacefully
We are asking that you commit to donating $15,000,000 per year to the National Association for Community Mediation (NAFCM), which will distribute the money to the more than 400 community mediation programs around the country so that they can continue to provide services that help to alleviate and end the unintended negative impacts of Facebook. Not only would you be assisting in the resolution of issues stemming from Facebook users, but also promoting nonviolent conflict resolution as a way of creating more peaceful communities.

To those who may sign the petition: Zuckerberg's Facebook is at the center of many heartbreaking conflicts, and as a powerful global citizen, he has the power to endorse and advocate for mediation as a peaceful means of healing those same conflicts his software enabled. Help us to raise awareness and petition for resources to create a more peaceful world!

Thanks! Brenda Cavanaugh
